Energy Resilience Initiative

The primary goal for many Alaska Native tribes is to improve energy resiliency in their communities. Due to their remote locations, these communities typically rely on diesel generators for year-round energy and require all fuel to be delivered by barge during the short summer shipping season—limiting shipments to just one or two deliveries for the year. This logistical constraint makes fuel both expensive and vulnerable to delays from weather impacts and supply disruptions.

 

To reduce diesel consumption, lower energy costs, and increase long-term grid reliability, many communities are transitioning toward diesel-off or diesel-minimal operation by investing in islanded microgrid solutions. This transition is enabled through the integration of solar, wind, or hydro-generation alongside grid-forming inverters, advanced control systems, and battery energy storage systems.

Process & Approach

1. Design Development

We partner closely with Tribal communities and their owner’s representatives to develop a system tailored to community priorities, operational needs, and grant requirements. Our collaborative process focuses on reliability, redundancy, maintainability, and long-term energy resilience. Kronus Engineering develops detailed system diagrams, schematics, and interface drawings to ensure seamless integration with existing microgrids and site infrastructure.

Once the system design is approved, Kronus procures all necessary components and assembles the turnkey Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at our facility in Boulder, Colorado.

We perform comprehensive Factory Acceptance Testing to verify system performance, controls, and safety before shipment. This process minimizes onsite troubleshooting and reduces logistical challenges for remote project locations.

Our technicians work alongside Tribal representatives and local partners to install, integrate, and commission the energy storage system, ensuring it operates properly within the existing microgrid environment.

We provide operator training, operations and maintenance documentation, and ongoing technical support to ensure long-term system reliability and promote community ownership of the energy infrastructure.
